Jurat
The purpose of a jurat is for you to swear or affirm that the contents of a document are true. For a jurat, you must personally appear before me and sign the document in my presence. I must then administer an oath or affirmation and have you speak aloud your promise that the statements in the document are true. The choice between an oath (solemn pledge to a Supreme Being) or affirmation (solemn pledge on your personal honor) must be made by you.
Acknowledgement
The purpose of an acknowledgment is to ensure that you are who your claim to be and that you have voluntarily signed the document. You must personally appear before me at the time of notarization to be positively identified and to declare ("acknowledge") that the signature on the document is yours and that you signed willingly. While it is common practice for clients to sign the document in front of me at the time of the notarization, it is not necessary. You may sign the document before bringing it to me and declare—or acknowledge—to me that the signature on the document is yours.

Certified Copy of Original
A copy certification confirms that a reproduction of an original document is a full, true, and accurate transcription or reproduction of the original. Documents requiring copy certification may include diplomas, IDs, leases, contracts, vehicle titles, medical records, or bills of sale.
To perform a copy certification, you (known as the "document custodian") must electronically transmit to me and visually present to me (via video conference) the original document. I will retain a copy of the document and complete a certificate to confirm that the copy is a true, accurate and complete copy of the original. Texas forbids the copy certification of vital, public documents, such as birth, death or marriage certificates. Certified copies of these documents typically must be obtained from the agency that holds the originals. Authentication of documents for use overseas may require further steps, including an apostille or embassy legalization. Verbal Oath or Affirmation
In some cases, you may simply need for a notary to administer an oath or affirmation orally, rather than as part of a written document. The purpose of administering a verbal oath or affirmation is to compel you to truthfulness.
An oath is a solemn pledge to a Supreme Being. An affirmation is a solemn pledge on your personal honor. The choice to speak an oath or an affirmation must be made by you. To complete an oath or affirmation, you must physically appear before me via video conference and present and acceptable proof of identification. The identification must be a government ID and it must be current. You will be required to raise your right hand before swearing or affirming to the truthfulness of your statement. If the wording is formulated as a statement, you will repeat after me. If it is formulated as a question, then you must answer with "Yes" or "I do." Because your answer puts you under penalty of perjury, your response must be clearly understood (i.e., no nodding, saying "uh-huh," or use of ambiguous phrases). |
